The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has issued a fresh warning to the Federal Government, saying doctors may withdraw their services nationwide if their unresolved concerns are not addressed before the July 23 deadline set in its 21-day ultimatum.

NMA President, Professor Bala Audu, in an interview on Sunday, said the association is ready to take action should the government fail to respond meaningfully to its concerns. The looming threat of industrial action stems primarily from the NMA’s rejection of a circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, which revised allowances for medical and dental officers. The association insists that the circular contained provisions that were not agreed upon through proper consultation.

Emphasizing the importance of dialogue, the NMA maintained that any directive impacting its members must be the result of mutual agreement rather than unilateral decisions. Although a meeting between the NMA and government officials was held two weeks ago, the association says time is running out. Another round of talks is expected soon, involving the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Health, and the Wages Commission.

Professor Audu warned that if these talks are not held promptly and do not yield satisfactory outcomes, the association may be forced to commence a nationwide strike.

Backing the national body, the Katsina State chapter of the NMA also rejected the controversial circular, describing it as disappointing and unacceptable. The branch cautioned that continued inaction could lead to disruptions in healthcare delivery in the state.

The NMA has called on the government to act swiftly and decisively to avert a breakdown in medical services.
