The UN envoy was in Kano to offer condolences over the deaths of elder statesman Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata and former President Muhammadu Buhari. However, her visit also served to deepen the conversation around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and strengthen UN engagement with the state.
Speaking during her meeting with the governor, Mrs. Mohammed lauded several of the administration’s recent initiatives. These include the installation of solar-powered streetlights, the creation of the Kano Centre for Disease Control, and expanded health insurance coverage targeting informal workers.
She also applauded the establishment of a new Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy and the repositioning of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, describing them as bold moves in line with global climate goals.
Mrs. Mohammed emphasized the importance of Kano’s role in Nigeria’s development landscape. “Kano is like a country, and it should be treated as such in terms of development support,” she said.
She further acknowledged the government’s investments in women’s empowerment, employment generation, and environmental protection, while informing the governor of the forthcoming UN Business and Investment Forum.
Governor Yusuf, in his remarks, expressed Kano’s readiness to work with the UN system on areas including healthcare, education, climate change, renewable energy, and sustainable economic development.
