Former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Femi Adesina, has said the former Nigerian leader might have died early if he had relied solely on the country’s healthcare system.

Adesina made the comment during an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday, where he defended Buhari’s repeated medical trips to the United Kingdom while in office. According to him, those foreign medical visits were not about luxury or showmanship but were critical to Buhari’s survival.
He explained that the UK doctors who attended to Buhari were already familiar with his health condition before he became president in 2015, making it logical to continue under their care. Adesina argued that trusting their expertise was necessary, especially given the limitations of Nigeria’s healthcare system at the time.
He maintained that the overseas treatment made it possible for Buhari to remain fit enough to carry out his duties throughout his tenure, adding that relying on local hospitals might have led to a different outcome.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari died on Sunday, June 13, 2025, in London while receiving treatment at a private clinic.
