At least three people have been confirmed dead and seven others rescued after a three-storey building under construction collapsed in the Abedi area of Sabon Gari, Kano State.

The incident occurred late Sunday night following heavy rainfall earlier in the evening. Many of the victims had sought shelter in the unfinished structure before it gave way, also damaging some nearby buildings.

Rescue efforts were still ongoing as of Monday morning, with emergency officials expressing concern that more people may still be trapped beneath the rubble.

A joint team comprising personnel from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Federal and State Fire Services, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and the Nigeria Police Force has been deployed to the site. They are working to recover victims and secure the area.

Eyewitnesses said the building had long shown signs of structural failure, with visible bending noticed as early as the first and second decking. Some residents alleged that the construction lacked proper supervision and had been flagged for safety concerns.

The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Isyaku Abdullahi Kubarachi, was at the scene but declined to comment, citing the sensitive nature of the ongoing operations.

So far, the seven rescued victims have been taken to Murtala Muhammad Hospital for medical treatment, while emergency crews continue to dig through the debris in search of survivors.
