The Gombe State Police Command has issued a strong safety advisory following the death of at least four individuals who drowned during recent heavy rainfall across the state.

The incidents, which occurred in various Local Government Areas, involved mostly children and young people who lost their lives in rivers, erosion sites, and open water channels. The police described the deaths as avoidable and urged communities to take extra precautions during the rainy season.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the command is urging parents, guardians, and community leaders to protect vulnerable individuals from dangerous water environments. The advisory included a call to keep children indoors during rainfall and away from rivers and erosion-prone areas.

Residents have been advised to stay away from open or unregulated water bodies and to avoid walking or driving through flooded areas, as the water’s depth and current can be unpredictable. Communities are also encouraged to place warning signs and barricades around known danger zones.

The police command further called on the public to report uncovered or dangerous erosion sites and drainage systems to local authorities.
