The incident occurred on the night of Wednesday, July 2, 2025, when Fatima, the bride, was reportedly married off without the knowledge or approval of her parents. Her father has since lodged a formal complaint with the Hisbah Board, seeking action over what he describes as an unlawful union.

Fiddausi Abubakar, Fatima’s mother, said she was shocked when a group of youths entered her home and informed her that her daughter had been married. She expressed concern, noting that no bride price had been paid as far as she was aware.

On the groom’s side, Mukhtar Musa Yakasai, father of Aliyu Mukhtar, said Fatima’s parents had earlier informed them of the relationship between their children. However, he told them at the time that his family was not ready for marriage. He said they were taken aback upon learning that the marriage had been conducted by Aliyu’s friends without any family involvement.

According to Aliyu Abdullahi, who acted as the bride’s guardian during the ceremony, Fatima had personally asked him to conduct the marriage on her behalf. Usman Muhammad, who stood in for the groom, also confirmed he was invited by Aliyu to officiate the ceremony.

Both Aliyu and Fatima declared that they love each other and had jointly planned the wedding. Fatima further claimed she personally received the bride price and pleaded with authorities not to separate her from her husband.

However, the Hisbah Commander in Kano Municipal, Ustaz Hamidan Tanko Alasaka, said the marriage is not valid under Islamic law, citing the absence of parental consent and due process.

The case is currently under investigation as religious authorities deliberate on the next steps.
