A High Court sitting in Jos, Plateau State, has sentenced a final-year student of Government Science Technical College, Bukuru, to death for the murder of a teacher.

The student, identified as Odey Emmanuel, was convicted of culpable homicide punishable by death under the Penal Code Law of Plateau State, 2017.

Delivering judgment, Justice S.J. Bakfur ruled that the prosecution had established its case beyond reasonable doubt, describing the act as premeditated and dangerous to society. Emmanuel was therefore sentenced to death by hanging.

According to the prosecution, led by Chief State Counsels Nanfe Mbap and Solomon Gyang Deme, the incident happened on July 30, 2022, on the school premises. The victim, Mr. Job Dashe, had disciplined the student for violating school rules by taking double rations. Emmanuel reportedly reacted angrily, issued open threats, and later attacked the teacher with a knife, stabbing him fatally in the chest.

The court heard from five witnesses, including school staff, police officers, and medical personnel. Their testimonies, along with medical and investigative reports, supported the case against Emmanuel. The defense was unable to counter the weight of the evidence presented.

In her ruling, Justice Bakfur condemned the growing trend of violence in schools and warned that such acts would not be tolerated. She noted that the evidence proved Emmanuel’s intent and deliberate action, which justified the death sentence.
