The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) says it will shut down Abuja once President Bola Tinubu concludes his July 3 project inaugurations, over unresolved wage issues affecting workers in the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

FCT NLC Chairman, Dr Stephen Knabayi, disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja, stating that the protest aims to force action on the prolonged strike by council workers and unpaid entitlements.
He said the union had issued a seven-day ultimatum on June 13, which expired on June 20, but postponed action to allow Tinubu complete activities marking his second year in office.
Knabayi listed the demands as full implementation of the new minimum wage, 25% and 35% salary increases, N35,000 wage award, 40% peculiar allowance, and reinstatement of the N70,000 wage briefly paid in May but halted in June without explanation.
He criticised council chairmen for prioritising 2026 election preparations over workers’ welfare and urged FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to intervene. Though Wike released N4.1 billion to support wage payments, he noted that primary school and healthcare workers are the councils’ responsibility.
The strike continues despite the intervention, with unions insisting all demands must be met before it ends.
