The Federal Government has announced a shift in the usual line-up for this year’s Democracy Day celebration, opting to cancel the traditional military parade.

In a statement issued by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Democracy Day, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to deliver a nationwide broadcast at 7:00 am on Thursday, June 12, 2025, to commemorate the 26th anniversary of Nigeria’s return to democratic rule.
Instead of the parade, the President will address a special joint session of the National Assembly at noon, where he is expected to speak on the State of the Nation, Nigeria’s democratic progress, and the urgency of fostering national unity and reforms.
Later in the day, a public lecture themed “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms” will hold at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja by 4:00 pm. The event is expected to draw participation from top government officials, political leaders, and representatives from civil society groups.
The Federal Government has urged Nigerians to tune in to the President’s address and take part in the broader national discourse aimed at strengthening the country’s democratic institutions and implementing long-term reforms.
