The donation was announced on Sunday, June 8, 2025, when Senator Barau visited the market, the largest phone-selling hub in the state, to commiserate with victims of the devastating incident that occurred on Friday. The fire broke out on June 6 around 2:00 p.m. at the Dan Sulaika Plaza within the market in Tarauni Local Government Area. The blaze, which coincided with Eid-el-Kabir festivities when many traders were away for prayers, was reportedly triggered by a battery explosion. It quickly spread through the tightly packed stalls filled with mobile phones, accessories, and electronic gadgets.
According to the Kano State Fire Service, about 47 shops were destroyed, with estimated losses running into billions of naira.
During his visit, Senator Barau praised the resilience and unity shown by the traders despite the tragedy, describing the market as a symbol of youth empowerment and a vital commercial centre for Kano’s enterprising young population.
Responding to a request by the market chairman, Jamilu Bala Gama, the senator also approved the installation of 1,000 solar-powered street lights, a Hilux security vehicle, and five motorcycles to enhance surveillance and ensure better safety within the market.
In addition, he announced plans for the construction of a pedestrian bridge to ease movement and promote public safety for both traders and customers.
Senator Barau described the incident as a test from Allah and prayed for relief and protection for all those affected, urging the public to remain steadfast and united in the face of such challenges.
