A popular TikTok content creator, Abubakar Kilina, has been remanded in a correctional facility by a magistrate court in Kano State following charges filed against him by the Kano State Censorship Board.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, Kilina was accused of promoting cross-dressing, indecent behavior, and the use of inappropriate language through his social media content, which the Board said contradicts the cultural and religious values of the state.

During the hearing at the No-Man’s-Land Magistrate Court, the prosecution led by Barrister Garzali Maigari Bichi presented the charges against Kilina, to which he pleaded guilty.

Presiding Magistrate, Hajiya Halima Wali, ordered that Kilina be held in custody from June 4 to June 17, 2025, pending the court’s final judgment.

The Executive Secretary of the Censorship Board, Alhaji Abba El-Mustapha, reiterated the agency’s determination to regulate social media conduct within Kano, warning that anyone found promoting immorality will face the full wrath of the law.

The Board noted that Kilina’s case is part of its broader crackdown on online content it deems offensive. In recent months, several other TikTok users have faced prosecution for similar offenses. Some were convicted and given the option of a one-year jail term or a N100,000 fine.

The Board said these steps are aimed at discouraging behavior on social media that runs contrary to societal norms in the state.
