Kano Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) announced it generated N65 billion in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for 2024, with prospects of reaching N70 billion after final reconciliations.

This was revealed by Dr. Zaid Abubakar, Chairman of KIRS, during an award ceremony on Thursday held by the agency in Kano.

Dr. Abubakar expressed confidence that the agency could double this figure to N150 billion by the end of 2025 through increased efforts and improved tax collection strategies. A key part of this plan involves registering at least two million taxpayers across the state. He noted that if each taxpayer contributes N100,000 annually, Kano could potentially raise N200 billion yearly.

The KIRS Chairman also praised the continuous support from Governor Abba Yusuf and emphasized the importance of cooperation with various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in enhancing revenue mobilization.

Highlighting technological advancements, Dr. Abubakar spoke about the success of the electronic tax system introduced by KIRS, which links tax registration to the National Identification Number (NIN). This initiative has contributed to a steady increase in NIN enrollments within Kano State. Currently, over 10.2 million residents have enrolled their NINs, with more than 2.1 million joining since the tax platform’s launch.

The event also celebrated outstanding staff members. Isa Yakubu Yargaya was named Staff of the Year and awarded N1.5 million in cash. Other high achievers received N500,000 each, while two top performers were granted houses at the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Housing estate.
