The Kano State Government has commenced the disbursement of over N16 billion in outstanding gratuities and allowances to former local government officials, including councillors who served under the All Progressives Congress (APC) between 2014 and 2024.

The payment exercise was launched on Wednesday by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at a ceremony in Kano. The initiative covers entitlements such as accommodation, leave, housing, and furniture allowances for both former and current political office holders across the 44 local government areas of the state.

Governor Yusuf explained that the payments are a rightful entitlement for those who served the state at the grassroots level. He noted that the initiative represents the administration’s commitment to fairness, justice, and accountability in public service.

The decision to carry out the payments received unanimous approval from the state executive council, which agreed that denying former officials their entitlements after years of service was unjust. The administration aims to correct the actions of the previous government, which had failed to pay the affected individuals.

The disbursement has been structured into three phases:

  • Tranche A (2014–2017) targets 903 beneficiaries who are expected to receive N1.8 billion immediately.
  • Tranche B (2018–2020) includes 1,198 beneficiaries and is scheduled for payment of N5.6 billion between May and July 2025.
  • Tranche C (2021–2024) will see 1,371 beneficiaries receive N8.2 billion between August and November 2025.

In addition, N1.27 billion has been earmarked and is currently being disbursed for housing and furniture allowances for current elected and appointed officials across all local government councils.

Governor Yusuf emphasized that the payments are not merely financial transactions but reflect the administration’s values of respect for public service, fulfilment of commitments, and responsible leadership.

He acknowledged the efforts of verification teams, finance officers, oversight committees, and administrative coordinators for their roles in ensuring the success of the process.

The Governor concluded the event by encouraging stakeholders to continue supporting the government’s efforts towards building a more prosperous and inclusive Kano State.
