A magistrate court in Kano has ordered the remand of four popular TikTokers following their arraignment for allegedly promoting indecency and using vulgar language on social media.

The development was contained in a press statement issued on Wednesday by the Kano State Censorship Board and signed by its Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman.

According to the statement, the TikTokers, namely Hafsa Hamisu (popularly known as Zoom Zoom), Usman Majidadi (Majidadi), Sumayya Muhammad (Summy Beby), and Usman Ibrahim (Usman Maikalar Kudi), were arraigned for content deemed offensive to cultural and religious values.

The Executive Secretary of the Board, Alhaji Abba El-Mustapha, said the legal action reflects the board’s renewed commitment to curbing indecent behavior on social media platforms within the state.

During proceedings at the No-Man’s-Land Magistrate Court on Wednesday, the prosecution, led by Barrister Garzali Maigari Bichi, presented the charges against the four defendants, who all pleaded guilty.

Presiding Magistrate Hajiya Halima Wali ordered their remand in a correctional facility until June 2, 2025, when the court will give its final ruling.

The Censorship Board noted that this case follows similar prosecutions in the past, where convicted TikTok users were sentenced to one year in prison or given an option of a N100,000 fine.

The board says such steps are aimed at deterring others and preserving public morality in line with Kano’s cultural and Islamic values.
