The Kano State Police Command confirmed the development in a statement released on Monday, May 26, 2025, noting that 27 suspects have been arrested in connection with the violence

Daily News 24 had earlier reported that the unrest followed the death of a young man, Abdullahi Musa, in police custody after he was arrested and detained for reckless motorcycle riding.

However, the police statement added that Musa, a motorcycle mechanic, was suspected to be under the influence of substances at the time of his arrest. According to the command, he later showed signs of weakness in detention and was rushed to Rano General Hospital, where he died the following morning.

The incident sparked a violent protest, during which angry youths looted the Rano Divisional Police Headquarters, set parts of it and two vehicles ablaze, and destroyed ten other vehicles. Baba Ali, the DPO, was seriously injured in the attack and was later confirmed dead at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where he was receiving treatment.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, visited the scene of the attack and paid a condolence visit to the Emir of Rano, Dr. Mohammed Isah Umar.

The police assured that a comprehensive investigation is underway and urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with authorities.
