Angry youths in Rano Local Government Area of Kano State on Monday set the Divisional Police Headquarters ablaze following the death of a young man, Abdullahi Musa, who died in police custody under controversial circumstances.

The incident was confirmed by the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, after a visit by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, alongside the Chairman of Rano LGA, Hon. Mallam Mohammed Naziru Ya’u. The delegation conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the destruction at the station and promised a thorough investigation into the incident.

Musa, who was reportedly arrested over a traffic offense, was said to have died during interrogation. Community members alleged that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), identified as Baba Ali, physically assaulted the suspect, leading to his death.

The news of Musa’s death triggered a protest that escalated when police allegedly fired shots at the crowd, injuring two youths, Hassan Salisu Hassan and Muhammad Ibrahim, who were later taken to Rano General Hospital for treatment.

In response, the enraged protesters began hurling stones at the police and eventually set the station on fire. The DPO, Baba Ali, was reportedly injured in the clash and received medical attention.
