The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the creation of a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Division aimed at revolutionizing Nigeria’s electoral process through technology.

This initiative was disclosed in a statement signed by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, following the commission’s weekly meeting held Thursday in Abuja.

The decision to establish the AI Division was influenced by INEC’s recent participation in continental conferences that explored the implications of AI in electoral systems. These engagements provided insight into both the risks and opportunities that AI presents in election management.

The newly established division is expected to harness AI to support data-driven decision-making, improve risk assessment, and automate key services. It will also focus on enhancing logistical planning and predictive analytics, contributing to more transparent, efficient, and credible elections.

The commission sees this development as part of its broader reforms to integrate advanced technology into its ICT systems.
