The Kano State Government has announced an immediate suspension of all live political programmes across media platforms in the state, citing concerns over content that could threaten its cultural and religious values.

The decision was disclosed during a meeting between government officials and media executives at the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs. The session was chaired by the Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya.

A statement issued by Sani Abba Yola, Director of Special Duties at the ministry, explained that the measure aims to curb the spread of offensive and potentially defamatory content that may incite public unrest or offend Kano’s cultural sensitivities.

The government clarified that the move is not intended to silence political opposition but to maintain peace and uphold the state’s long-standing traditions.

Under the new directive, individuals invited to speak on live political programmes must sign an undertaking to avoid inflammatory or defamatory statements. Media presenters are also urged to refrain from asking leading or suggestive questions that could harm reputations or the state’s image.

The government observed a noticeable drop in the use of abusive language on air, attributing it to ongoing engagement with media outlets. It also announced the launch of awareness campaigns targeting media professionals and religious leaders, particularly members of the Council of Friday Imams, as part of efforts to promote responsible broadcasting.
