A late-night attack by Boko Haram insurgents on Izge community in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State has led to the deaths of an army captain and a soldier.

The Emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Mohammed Shehu Timta, confirmed the incident, saying it occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday. He said the terrorists launched a fierce assault but were eventually repelled by a combined team of Nigerian troops, Civilian Joint Task Force members, hunters, and vigilantes.

Despite the loss of two personnel, the security operatives reportedly killed three terrorists, who were forced to flee, abandoning their weapons and over ten motorcycles. The Emir said pursuit operations were ongoing to track down the fleeing assailants.

While offering prayers for the fallen soldiers, the monarch praised the gallantry of the troops and thanked Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum for his consistent logistical support to the frontline forces.

He, however, urged the federal government to equip security operatives with advanced technological warfare tools to bolster their capacity in tackling insurgency.

This attack adds to a troubling resurgence of violence across the North East. Just days earlier, Boko Haram fighters struck the 27 Task Force Brigade in Buni Yadi, Yobe State, killing at least four soldiers and destroying key military assets.
