Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has announced plans to close the Muna Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Maiduguri in the coming weeks, as part of his administration’s ongoing efforts to phase out formal IDP settlements in the state capital.

The governor made this known during an early morning visit to the camp, which was established at the height of the Boko Haram insurgency and currently shelters about 10,000 displaced persons. Zulum revealed that about 75 percent of the camp’s residents have already been resettled in safer communities.

He assured those still living in the camp that adequate support will be provided to help them reintegrate and rebuild their livelihoods as they return home.

According to the governor, the planned closure of the Muna camp is a key step in Borno State’s transition from emergency humanitarian response to long-term recovery and development.

Zulum, who has previously shut down over 12 formal IDP camps during his first term in office, reaffirmed his commitment to restoring dignity and normalcy to displaced communities through sustainable resettlement programmes.
