The Kano State Government has warned parents against refusing polio vaccinations, saying anyone obstructing the ongoing campaign will face sanctions.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by his deputy, Comrade Abdulsalam Gwarzo, gave the warning on Monday during the launch of the first round of the 2025 polio vaccination exercise in Warawa Local Government Area. The caution comes after three new polio cases were confirmed in Warawa, Bunkure, and Nassarawa councils.

The government stressed that vaccine refusal has no religious basis and urged parents to prioritize their children’s health before the campaign ends in December.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Labaran Yusuf, noted that immigration into Kano has complicated the vaccination effort, but measures are in place to ensure every child is reached.

Michael Banda, Chief of UNICEF’s Kano Field Office, also warned that even a single polio case could trigger a fresh outbreak, despite global progress in reducing the disease by 99.9% since 1988.
