The Federal Government Staff Housing Loans Board (FGSHLB) has begun moves to recover properties from retired civil servants who failed to repay their housing loans.

According to a statement by Mrs. Ngozi Obiechina, Head of Information and Public Relations at FGSHLB, on Thursday in Abuja, the board is compiling a list of retired public servants who defaulted on their housing loan agreements. The aim is to retrieve mortgaged properties and enforce compliance with repayment terms.

The action follows a directive from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, reminding public servants to obtain a Certificate of Non-Indebtedness before retirement. The reminder was issued in a memo by Mrs. Patience Oyekunle, Permanent Secretary of the Career Management Office.

FGSHLB Executive Secretary, Mrs. Salamatu Ahmed, stated that the board has the right to take legal steps to repossess properties from those who exited the service without fulfilling their loan obligations. This measure applies to both retired and currently serving civil servants with outstanding debts.

The board is finalizing a comprehensive list of affected retirees, which will be forwarded to relevant agencies to begin the debt recovery process.

Public servants with unpaid loans are being urged to regularize their status and secure the required clearance certificate to avoid legal action. The board reiterated its commitment to enforcing loan recovery and ensuring accountability in the use of public housing funds.
