In a statement issued by the airline’s Head of Corporate Communications, Ejike Ndiulo on Wednesday, the suspension was described as a safety measure due to the unavailability of vital weather reports provided by NiMet, which are necessary for safe aircraft landings particularly amid the current season marked by heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
“Flight safety cannot be guaranteed without real-time weather updates from the control tower,” Ndiulo stated. “We have therefore chosen to suspend our operations until NiMet resumes full service.”
The airline expressed regret over the inconvenience the decision may cause and assured passengers that they would be contacted with updates and options for rescheduling their flights.
NiMet workers commenced an industrial action on Tuesday to press for improved conditions of service and to address other unresolved grievances. The strike has significantly affected the agency’s ability to deliver essential weather services, impacting flight operations nationwide.
