Flight operations at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport were significantly affected on Wednesday following a protest by workers of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).

The aggrieved staff were demonstrating over the government’s failure to implement the new national minimum wage.

An airport employee revealed that the protest disrupted several flight schedules, as NiMet plays a vital role in providing weather information to pilots. Although a few flights managed to operate, many others were delayed or cancelled, leaving passengers stranded and airport officials overwhelmed.

The Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Employees, which represents the protesting workers, stated that the demonstration was prompted by NiMet’s refusal to implement the new minimum wage.

They also cited unpaid staff allowances and the agency’s failure to provide essential training as part of their grievances. The union issued a one-month ultimatum to the agency to meet their demands or risk further industrial action.

As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) had not released an official statement on the protest.
