Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has explained that many northerners did not criticise former President Muhammadu Buhari because they benefited from his administration.

Sani made the remark during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, where he pointed out that key positions, particularly in the security sector, were dominated by individuals from the North, especially from Buhari’s home state of Katsina.

He mentioned the Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) as examples of such appointments.

Sani also noted that military and paramilitary positions favored the northern region, contributing to a sense of loyalty among those who benefited from the system. This, he argued, led to the silence from many in the North during Buhari’s tenure.

He contrasted this situation with the current administration of President Bola Tinubu, where there has been growing criticism from southern Nigerians over similar concerns of lopsided appointments. Sani suggested that if the roles were reversed, northerners would have likely been outspoken in their opposition.
