The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration has issued a stern warning to landowners in Abuja, mandating them to develop their allocated plots within two years or risk losing them.

FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, announced the new directive as part of ongoing reforms to tackle land speculation and accelerate development within the territory. The policy is expected to come into effect on April 21, 2025.

The development was disclosed on Friday in a joint statement by the Director of Land Administration in the FCTA, Chijioke Nwankwoeze, and the Senior Special Assistant to the Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka. The reforms target key issues such as the Statutory Right of Occupancy, land development, and documentation related to Area Councils.

Under the new policy, allottees must also settle all bills, fees, rents, and charges within 21 days of issuance. The administration warns that any failure to comply with the set timelines whether for payments or land development will attract strict sanctions, including the revocation of land titles.

The reforms also touch on the Mass Housing Programme introduced in 2000 to address affordable housing through Public-Private Partnerships. A revised framework will now guide the titling of Mass Housing and Sectional Interests. Developers and subscribers are expected to submit necessary applications to the Department of Land Administration for proper processing.

Minister Wike emphasized that the implementation of the reforms will be carried out without favoritism, stating that landowners who fail to develop their plots within the stipulated period will lose their rights, irrespective of their influence or political connections.
