At least 13 vigilante members have been killed in Morai village, Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State, following an ambush by suspected Lakurawa militants.

The vigilantes had reportedly mobilized to retrieve cattle stolen by the militants when they were surrounded and overpowered. According to local sources, the militants had taken a herd of livestock from the village, prompting the vigilantes to launch a counter-attack. Unknown to them, the assailants had laid in wait and ambushed the group, leading to heavy casualties.

The attackers are believed to be members of Lakurawa, a violent extremist group operating primarily in parts of Sokoto and Kebbi states. Initially formed as a self-defense militia, the group has evolved into a radical force enforcing strict interpretations of Islamic law, levying unauthorized taxes, and attacking both civilians and security personnel.

Despite attempts to get an official response, the Kebbi State Police Command remained silent on the incident.
