Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has suspended a top government official, Nasiru Abubakar Kigo, following his controversial comments linking the state to high levels of homosexuality.

Kigo, who serves as a permanent secretary and is also known as an Islamic cleric, was suspended indefinitely after he reportedly claimed that Kebbi and Sokoto States have the highest number of registered gays and lesbians in the country.

The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ahmed Idris, confirmed the suspension on Friday, stating that it followed a directive from the state’s Head of Service, Malami Shekare.

In a letter addressed to Kigo, Shekare described the statement as “social misconduct” that undermines the moral image of Kebbi State. He added that the suspension would remain in effect pending the outcome of an investigation into the matter.

The Kebbi State Government had earlier dismissed Kigo’s remarks as baseless and fictitious. The controversial claim was reportedly made during a seminar held at Adamu Aliero Housing Estate in Birnin Kebbi.
