The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the petition for the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, as invalid due to its failure to meet constitutional requirements.

In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, INEC explained that the petitioners did not gather the required number of signatures/thumbprints.

The total number of registered voters in the district is 474,554, meaning at least 237,278 signatures were needed. However, only 208,132 signatures were collected, falling short by 29,146.

This decision comes amid ongoing political tensions between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, following her accusation of sexual harassment.
