The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of favoring the Yoruba ethnic group in key government appointments.

In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA expressed concern over the recent extension of Mrs. Kemi Nanna Nandap’s tenure as Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), which was approved by President Tinubu until December 31, 2026. The group questioned whether there were no other qualified individuals, outside of the Yoruba ethnic group, who could have taken on the role.
HURIWA argued that this move is indicative of a larger pattern where ethnicity is prioritized over competence when selecting individuals for national positions. They likened this trend to the previous administration, which was accused of favoring Fulani appointees.
In addition, HURIWA condemned the extension of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun’s tenure, made possible through a controversial amendment to the Police Act. The group contended that this decision was influenced by ethnic and personal considerations, rather than adherence to public service rules.
The group claims that the president’s decisions are undermining merit and promoting tribalism within the national government.
