A coalition of civil society organizations under the Global Initiatives for Good Governance (GIGG) has blamed Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi for the loss of lives during the Eid el-Fitr celebrations.
The group accused them of disregarding a police ban on the Durbar festival, which they say led to the tragic events.

In a statement issued on Monday, the coalition, led by Malami Abubakar Yahaya Capenta, described the incident as part of a troubling pattern of negligence. They cited previous cases, including demolitions in Rimin Zakara, which also resulted in fatalities.
According to the group, Governor Yusuf’s public remarks following the incidents lacked empathy and accountability. They also recalled that within days of assuming office, his administration carried out widespread demolitions that reportedly led to the deaths of over 25 people.
Despite their criticism, the CSOs commended security agencies for their role in maintaining order. However, they insisted on immediate action to investigate and hold those responsible accountable.
Coalition’s Key Demands
The group outlined the following demands:
- Accountability: A full probe into the deaths and injuries caused by the Durbar celebrations.
- Justice: Legal action against officials who defied the police ban.
- Transparency: A public explanation from the Kano State Government regarding its handling of the situation.
The coalition urged Kano residents to remain vigilant and demand accountability from their leaders to prevent further tragedies.
Violence erupted at the Eid ground on Sunday when attackers targeted Emir Sanusi’s entourage, killing vigilante member Surajo Rabiu and injuring another. The police arrested 20-year-old Usman Sagiru and launched an investigation, summoning key figures for questioning. Authorities warned against unlawful gatherings and vowed strict enforcement to maintain order.
I blame Federal government and Co for this turbulence, how can them allow and support this indecisive ruling of Emirates in kano , for their political reason .
In addition, how can a Governor can not decide for his state . Also how can an emir be prevented from going to the mosque for eid congregation?
If this people cannot feel free and move free in their territory how can the masses think of safety.
