Daily News 24 reports that the call was made in a statement issued on Friday by the Wazirin Sokoto, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, who also serves as the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Sokoto. Muslims were encouraged to observe the crescent and report any sighting to the nearest district or village head, who will then relay the information to the Sultan for confirmation.

The sighting of the moon signifies the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations.

The statement also prayed for divine assistance in fulfilling this religious duty.
