Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi of Ebonyi North has defended his heated exchange with former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, during a Senate Committee hearing on Tuesday.

The altercation occurred amid a petition filed by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Ezekwesili attended the hearing alongside Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal team and the chief petitioner.

The session turned tense when the petitioner questioned the neutrality of committee members, alleging their ties to Akpabio. Some lawmakers viewed the remarks as an attempt to discredit the committee. Ezekwesili also came under scrutiny for insisting she be placed under oath, stating, “I am a citizen of Nigeria.”

As discussions grew more heated, Nwaebonyi and Ezekwesili clashed, with the senator lashing out and Ezekwesili calling him a “hooligan.” Addressing the confrontation later, Nwaebonyi insisted that Ezekwesili provoked him and argued that his reaction was justified.

“How can I regret the scenario? I gave it to her. Is it fair for her to address me that way?” he remarked when asked if he had any regrets.
