At least 21 people have been confirmed dead in a fatal crash involving a Toyota Hummer bus and a trailer along the Zaria–Kano highway.

The tragic accident occurred at about 8:23 a.m. on Sunday, July 6, near Kasuwar Dogo in Dakatsalle, Kano State.

According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the collision involved a DAF trailer with registration number GWL 422 ZE and a Toyota Hummer Bus marked KMC 171 YM.

Preliminary investigations by the FRSC revealed that the crash was caused by a route violation by the bus driver, resulting in a head-on collision with the oncoming trailer. The impact triggered a fire that engulfed both vehicles.

FRSC Sector Commander in Kano, Corps Commander MB Bature, said 24 people were involved in the crash. “Twenty-one persons lost their lives, while three sustained varying degrees of injuries,” he said.

Rescue efforts were carried out by the FRSC team in collaboration with the Federal and State Fire Services and the Nigeria Police. The burnt bodies of the deceased were deposited at Nassarawa Hospital Mortuary, while the injured were rushed to Garun Malam General Hospital for treatment.

The road has since been cleared, and normal traffic flow restored, thanks to the FRSC tow truck team and security agencies.

Bature expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, offering condolences to the bereaved families and praying for the recovery of the injured. He urged road users to strictly adhere to traffic rules, avoid route violations and refrain from dangerous overtaking and night travel.
