The attack happened on Thursday when a mob, acting on misinformation, lynched the victims and set their truck on fire.
The victims, mostly northern hunters, were travelling from Port Harcourt to Kano when they were stopped around 1:30 p.m. by local vigilantes. Their Dane guns, commonly used for hunting, were mistaken for a threat.
The vigilantes raised an alarm, triggering panic among residents. A mob quickly formed and attacked the travelers, killing 16 on the spot. Some bodies were thrown into the fire, while others were trapped inside the burning vehicle.
Security operatives arrived after a distress call but too late to prevent the killings. Four survivors were rescued and taken to His Grace Hospital in Uromi for treatment. Authorities confirmed the arrest of five suspects.
The police have vowed to investigate and bring those responsible to justice.
