At least 12 inmates have escaped from the Federal Correctional Centre in Kotonkarfe, Kogi State, following a jailbreak that occurred in the early hours of Monday.

Kogi State’s Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, confirmed the development in a statement, describing it as an “unfortunate” incident. He assured that the state government is working with security agencies to investigate the escape and recapture the fleeing inmates.
According to Fanwo, the prisoners reportedly fled through the tower, raising suspicions of internal sabotage. The state government has urged the Federal Government to launch a full-scale investigation into the matter.
In response, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has directed the State Security Adviser to collaborate with the correctional facility and other security agencies to prevent future security breaches.
Fanwo praised the swift response of security forces and urged residents to remain alert, reporting any suspicious individuals to authorities. He assured the public that the situation is under control and that there is no need for panic, emphasizing that the protection of lives and property remains a top priority.
