Twelve drug traffickers in Kano State have been sentenced to a total of 36 years in prison, following their conviction at the Federal High Court 1 in Kano.
Each of the traffickers was sentenced to three years in jail, a decision that reflects the court’s commitment to curbing drug trafficking in the region.

The conviction comes after a thorough investigation and prosecution by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The sentences were handed down for their involvement in illegal drug activities, including trafficking and distribution at the notorious Filin Idi drug den, a well-known hub for illicit drug operations. The court’s decision to impose jail terms with no option of fines emphasizes the severity of the crime and sends a strong message to those involved in drug trafficking in the state.
The convictions were secured at the Federal High Court 1 in Kano on Friday, with Justice S.A. Amobeda presiding over the case. Sadiq Maigatari, the spokesperson for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kano State Command, confirmed the verdicts in a statement issued on Saturday.
Maigatari highlighted the significant role the convicted drug traffickers played in orchestrating drug trafficking activities at the notorious Filin Idi drug den, which has long been a hotspot for illicit drug trade in Kano. He emphasized that the court’s decision underscored the agency’s determination to crack down on drug-related crimes in the state.
One of the convicts, Lawan Sani, had been the subject of a 10-month manhunt after attacking an NDLEA officer during his attempted arrest. Following his capture, Sani was handed an additional two-year jail sentence, bringing his total imprisonment to five years.
The NDLEA spokesperson also praised the conviction as a major milestone in the agency’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse in the region. “This conviction serves as a strong deterrent to those who continue to exploit the Filin Idi area for their illegal activities,” Maigatari said.
